The Harlequin Tusk is a captivating marine fish found in coral reefs throughout the Indian Ocean and Australia. Indian Ocean specimens showcase bold orange stripes outlined in white with a soft blue hue near the tail, while their Australian counterparts bear orange stripes bordered by vivid blue stretching from the pectoral fin to the tail. Both types possess striking blue tusks, which are actually their teeth, used to break open and consume shelled invertebrates. Though they can be somewhat timid when young, they gradually become more outgoing and develop a distinct personality as they adapt to their environment.
A 125-gallon or larger aquarium is ideal for housing a Harlequin Tusk, providing ample space and live rock formations for shelter. They do well with moderately aggressive, active tankmates such as Angelfish, Tangs, and smaller Triggers, but only one Harlequin Tusk should be kept per tank to prevent conflict. While these fish generally leave corals undisturbed, they will prey on small crustaceans like snails or crabs, making them better suited to a FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) setup.
Their diet should include a variety of meaty foods such as vitamin-enriched frozen mysis shrimp, vitamin-enriched frozen brine shrimp, and other high-quality seafood-based options. Providing high-grade marine flake and pellet food helps ensure they receive balanced nutrition. With proper care and a well-maintained environment, these stunning fish will thrive and become a lively centerpiece in a suitable aquarium
