The Black Saddleback Clownfish, also known as the Saddleback Clownfish, features a predominantly black body contrasted by a vivid yellow face and pectoral fins edged in yellow. A distinctive white stripe spans the full width of its body, setting it apart from other members of the clownfish family.

These fish thrive in aquariums of 113 litres or larger. While they can be kept in small groups, they do best when paired with a suitable host anemone. Compatible anemone species include the Carpet Anemone (Stichodactyla spp.), Sebae Anemone (Heteractis crispa), and Ritteri Anemone (Heteractis magnifica). Be sure your tank setup and lighting can meet the specific needs of any host anemone before adding one to your system. As they mature, Black Saddlebacks may become more territorial, especially toward their own kind.

Captive-bred Black Saddlebacks offer several benefits over their wild counterparts. They tend to be hardier, more adaptable to aquarium life, and are less likely to carry diseases, making them an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquarists.

While a bit more challenging to breed and raise compared to other clownfish, dedicated hobbyists can successfully spawn them in a home aquarium. Females are noticeably larger than males, and bonded pairs typically remain close together. These clownfish are egg layers, depositing eggs on flat surfaces and guarding them from other tank mates. Depending on water temperature, the eggs hatch within 8 to 11 days. After hatching, the fry must be moved to a separate rearing tank and fed a diet beginning with rotifers, followed by baby brine shrimp as they grow.
