The Passer Angelfish (Holacanthus passer), also known as the King Angelfish, is a striking and bold addition to any large saltwater aquarium. Adults display a deep navy blue body with a distinctive vertical white stripe that runs from the dorsal fin down toward the pelvic area. Accents of yellow highlight the dorsal fin edges, caudal (tail) fin, and pectoral fins. The coloration of the ventral fins differs by sexfemales have yellow ventral fins, while males display white. Juveniles, in contrast, are bright orange with one prominent white stripe and several vivid blue lines running vertically along the body.
This species can grow over 12 inches in length, so it requires a spacious aquariuma minimum of 250 gallons is recommended. While the Passer Angelfish is hardy and resilient, it is known for being territorial and may become aggressive, particularly as it matures. For best results, house it with other semi-aggressive tank mates. Due to its tendency to graze on live rock and nip at both hard and soft coralsas well as clam mantlesit is not reef-safe and is best suited to fish-only or FOWLR (fish-only with live rock) systems.
Feeding requirements include a varied diet with a strong emphasis on plant-based nutrition. Offer marine algae, Spirulina, high-quality angelfish preparations containing sponge matter, and a mix of meaty foods. Feed at least three times per day to ensure optimal health and vibrant coloration.
