Meiacanthus atrodorsalis, commonly known as the Forktail Blenny or Blackline Fang Blenny, is a sleek and vibrant reef fish that combines striking coloration with a peaceful temperamentmaking it a favorite among aquarists. Its elongated body features a bright yellow front that transitions into a soft blue or silver toward the tail, with a distinct black stripe running from the snout through the dorsal fin. This bold contrast, paired with its elegant swimming style, adds a dynamic splash of color to any reef setup.
Native to coral reefs and lagoons across the Western Pacific, the Forktail Blenny grows to approximately 1011 cm in length. It thrives in aquariums of at least 90 litres, where it can explore rock crevices and open swimming space. Unlike many other blennies, Meiacanthus atrodorsalis is a mid-water swimmer rather than a percher, often gliding gracefully through the water column. It is also peaceful and reef-safe, making it an excellent addition to community reef tanks with corals and invertebrates.
One of the most interesting traits of the Forktail Blenny is its built-in defense mechanism. It possesses venomous fangsused strictly for defense, not offensewhich help deter predators. This unique adaptation allows it to coexist peacefully with more assertive tank mates, as few fish dare to challenge it. However, it should not be housed with overly aggressive or highly territorial species, as constant stress may affect its health and behavior.
Diet-wise, the Forktail Blenny is not a picky eater. It accepts a wide range of foods, including marine pellets, flakes, and frozen offerings such as mysis shrimp and finely chopped seafood. A varied diet enriched with marine proteins and occasional algae-based options will promote optimal health and coloration. With its beautiful appearance, hardy nature, and interesting behavior, Meiacanthus atrodorsalis is a fantastic, low-maintenance choice for both beginner and seasoned reef keepers.
