The Pomacentrus auriventris, commonly known as the Goldbelly Damselfish, is a striking addition to any marine aquarium. Recognized for its vivid coloration, this species showcases an electric blue upper body that fades into a rich golden-yellow bellyhence the name. Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, the Goldbelly Damselfish is a hardy and active swimmer, making it ideal for both beginner and experienced reef hobbyists.
This damselfish is relatively small, typically reaching a maximum size of around 6 cm, which makes it well-suited for aquariums with limited space. However, due to its active nature and territorial tendencies, its recommended to keep them in a tank of at least 80 litres, especially if housed with other fish. They may display some aggression towards conspecifics and similar-looking species, so careful planning of tank mates and aquascaping with plenty of hiding spaces will help minimize conflicts.
Goldbelly Damselfish thrive in reef environments and are reef-safe, posing no threat to corals or most invertebrates. They prefer stable water conditions with temperatures ranging between 24C and 27C, a pH of 8.1 to 8.4, and specific gravity around 1.0201.025. As omnivores, their diet should consist of a variety of marine-based flakes, pellets, and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and finely chopped seafood to ensure vibrant coloration and robust health.
When introduced correctly and housed with compatible species, Pomacentrus auriventris brings a bold splash of color and activity to the aquarium. With proper care, they can live for several years and become a centerpiece in nano and mid-sized reef displays. Their ease of care, combined with their brilliant appearance, makes the Goldbelly Damselfish a popular and rewarding choice for marine enthusiasts.
